AKIRA - Architecture of Neo Tokyo – Second Installation at Morikami Museum
Following a highly successful debut at the Tchoban Foundation in Berlin in 2022, we are excited to bring AKIRA - Architecture of Neo Tokyo to its next destination: the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. This exhibition offers a rare look at the visionary artistry of AKIRA’s creative team, particularly the contributions of art director Toshiharu Mizutani and his colleagues Katsufumi Hariu, Norihiro Hiraki, Shinji Kimura, Satoshi Kuroda, Hiromasa Ogura, Hiroshi Ohno, Hajime Soga, Tsutomu Uchida und Takashi Watabe, whose work transformed Katsuhiro Otomo’s narrative into an unforgettable visual masterpiece.
At the heart of the exhibition lies the extraordinary technical and artistic achievements of the art department, who meticulously crafted the intricate cityscapes and urban landscapes that define Neo Tokyo. The result is an exhibition that reveals not just the iconic scenes from AKIRA but also the precision, dedication, and innovative spirit of the art staff who made it possible. Visitors will have the chance to explore original production materials, concept designs, and detailed sketches, immersing themselves in the painstaking process that brought Neo Tokyo to life on screen.
This installation at Morikami Museum remains true to the original Berlin presentation and offers a chance to reconnect with the immersive quality of Neo Tokyo’s visual and thematic depth. The exhibition is curated by Stefan Riekeles, Managing Director of the Riekeles Gallery, in collaboration with Hiroko Myokam of Eizo Workshop (Japan).
