The physical space at the Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture is limited. Therefore we cannot present all the precious background artwork we would like to show. Instead of overcrowding the showcase I’ll present some of the “outtakes” here.

Original background for cut no. 335 of Ghost in the Shell. This is the shot following the “hotel”. It’s one of my favorite pieces done by art director Hiromasa Ogura.

The whole sequence is “background only” which means that the artwork is the main protagonist of the scene and needs to be of outstanding quality.

Background for cut no. 338 of Ghost in the Shell, painted by Hiromasa Ogura as well. A slope washed by rainwater. Layouter Atsushi Takeuchi placed the camera at an unsually low position in this cut as if to suggest that the water flows directly onto the viewer.

Because the water is animated on cels, these need to be placed between the layer of the small mural and the lowest layer of the piece.

Original background artwork by Hiromasa Ogura for cut no. 521 of Ghost in the Shell.

The partially submerged museum in the upper left stages the feature’s final showdown.
